Actually the law states that you have to display the plates that were issued to you be that 1 or 2
California Vehicle Code Division 3, Chapter 1, Article 9 Table of Contents V.C. 5200. Now i figure in a state where we have more registered vehicles than people it would be really hard for a cop to get positive info from Sacramento that you were issued 2 plates instead of one assuming the DMV actually keeps track of that. I have no intentions of drilling holes in my front bumper to attach one so I'll take my chances in court.
