Power Steering Recall **(Now Official)**

UPDATE: Now Official Recall

http://www.businessweek.com/news/201...-update1-.html

A division of the FDOT (Federal Department of Transportation) called the NHTSA (National Highway Transportation Safety Administration) is responsible for cataloging safety complaints about vehicles sold in the United States. This information is used to initiate recalls by the auto manufacturers.

We know that the power steering in our cars is a VERY big issue that many of us have had to deal with. We love our balts, but this needs to be taken care of.

The following is the link to their site. Just click on complaints. Maybe we can make a difference in getting this problem solved before it causes something horrible to happen.

Office of Defects Investigation (ODI)

If the above link does not work you can copy and paste the following URL

www.nhtsa.gov

then click on recalls

Even if we deal with our own Cobalts like this there are still a million others on the the road whos drivers may not be aware of the potential problems.

I just got a 2008 Cobalt Sport in October. A coworker just told me today he'd heard about a power steering recall on the radio. Since I'm a new Cobalt owner I was just wondering if there are specific years involved and what experience anyone has had with this. I looked up the investigation results on the posted site but it doesn't really tell you much.

The site shows an open investigation and a Service Bulletin. It does not show a recall at this point.

Here is the summary of the open investigation copied from their site... It sites 1,132 complaints. I think we have the opportunity to help contribute greatly to this number.

ODI HAS RECEIVED 1,132 COMPLAINTS ALLEGING SUDDEN LOSS OF ELECTRIC POWER STEERING (EPS) IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLES. MOST OF THE COMPLAINTS (754) HAVE BEEN RECEIVED IN THE PAST SIX MONTHS. APPROXIMATELY 10 PERCENT OF THE COMPLAINTS ALLEGE THAT THE LOSS OF STEERING ASSIST RESULTED IN DIFFICULTLY CONTROLLING THE VEHICLE, SUCH AS DEPARTING FROM THE DESIRED TRAVEL LANE. ELEVEN COMPLAINTS ALLEGE THAT THE SUDDEN INCREASE IN STEERING EFFORT CAUSED BY THE ALLEGED DEFECT RESULTED IN A CRASH, WITH ONE ALLEGING AN INJURY. A PRELIMINARY EVALUATION HAS BEEN OPENED TO ASSESS THE FREQUENCY, SCOPE AND SAFETY CONSEQUENCES OF THE ALLEGED DEFECT IN THE SUBJECT VEHICLES.

I never let anyone work on any of my cars any garage/dealer will rape you, its way cheaper to buy the part and put it on yourself plus you learn alot. All you need to do is buy a repair manual for $20 tells you how to pretty much do anything you need to the car
