ok question i bought my car used...well when i drove it off the lot i didnt pay any attention to the digital settings....well the next day i was playing with them and i noticed the oil things said less then 100%...now im thinking "why is this not at 100 when i just purchased the car and everything should have been checked, changed, cleaned, etc"...well i took it back to the dealership and asked them why was the gage reading less then 100 and it was suppose to have been a fresh oil change the day before...well he did the 3 pump thing and the gage reset...now my question is.....does the gage detect what the actual oil level is when reset or does it automatically reset to 100% irregardless of what level the oil is actually on? (did that make sense?)

It doesn't indicate the level, it indicates the oil life. I think that's what you were asking....

the guage tells you the "expected" oil life based on a few things. it's based off of driving conditions, cold starts, etc. it should be used more as a guideline than anything. if you're not sure if the oil was changed, better safe than sorry.

Its not an exact thing...its just a ballpark reference. I change mine every 3k regardless of what it says.
