Need Help Choosing Motor Oil

I recently purchased a 2008 cobalt 2.2 automatic and going o do an oil change this month. Problem is I can't get ahold of the seller to ask what oil he was using on it.

What would you recommend me to use? It has 74xxx miles on it.

I have heard Mobil 1 Full synthetic but not too sure how it will react.

Also which filter is good?

I use Mobil 1 Full synthetic with a Napa Gold (WIX) filter. No problems so far.

you'll be pretty safe with any big name brand(mobil 1, castrol, etc...) and a good filter. Synthetic not necessary for the 2.2 but its not a bad idea either. If you change in short intervals, 3-5months conventional is not a bad thing.

First thing I did when I bought the Cobalt is drain the oil dry, then added Valvoline full synthetic 5W30 and a new Delco filter. But I think any Good name brand full synthetic is fine. When I first got the car it was noisy at start-up, not anymore.

Not that you haven't already seen a few choices, but I am a big Mobil 1 full synthetic + wix filter fan. You could always look into the higher millage oils as well, they do have a few more additives in them. It really comes down to what you want to spend and believe in.

Well I have heard alot of good reviews from Mobil 1 and valvoline with the Wix filter. so I might just debate on those 2. As for the filter would the Fram tough guard work well? Or should I go with the WIX filter.

Im asking all these questions so I know and stick to a certain brand from here on out.

And thanks for all your replies they have helped narrow my decision.

I put an AC Delco in for my first oil change and it showed deterioration after 5000 Kms so I decided to install a Fram ToughGuard. At the next oil change 5000Kms later it showed no deterioration at all but it was very dark with dirt. So I'm sticking to the Fram now and when display shows 60% I change the filter and then I change oil and filter at around 15% which is about 10000Kms. So filter @ every 5K and oil @ every 10K.

I installed the Fram filter (whatever they had at Canadian Tire), works just fine for me, and always use Mobil 1 full synthetic now that I'm boosted, it's good stuff.
