I can say that I have seen some sh!t that you wouldnt believe get covered by warranty. Like, you think to yourself, how can this guy really have the balls to expect GM to warranty this problem?? For instance, 2005 Cavalier with 4500 miles. All 4 tires bald, and the rears are shaped like stop signs, not round. The muffler was just cut off, thats it, just cut it off and let the pipe hang. It had aftermarket headlights, taillights, seats, stereo, and a CAI made from PVC pipe, a header and the typical paint everything(vents, covers, trim) white. The customers complaint was that the vehicle was hard to shift into 3rd. and wouldnt stay in any other gear unless you held your hand on the shifter. (4500 miles.....) I took pictures of everything, and then disassembled the trans. The clutch had less than 1mm of usable friction surface left, the flywheel was blue and there was only ONE undamaged moving part in the transmission.

This was a doctors kids first car. he modified it poorly, beat the ever loving f*ck out of it, and then had the nerve to say there was something wrong with it!!!! After about a month of *****ing back and forth between him, the dealer, GM and his father GM agreed to fix EVERYTHING once. I replaced the trans, flywheel, clutch, actuator, shifter, shift lever, complete exhaust from the head back, all 4 tires, front brakes, and installed the factory air intake. GM then voided his entire warranty package except the body corrosion rust through.

A guy with a a supercharged, nitrous fed H2 got 4 transmissions free!!! never voided his warranty at all.

A guy with a stroked and turbo'd C5 Vette got two trans rebuilds.

A guy who installed an amp behind his seat in a C5 vette and drilled into the gas tanks, got two free gas tanks, NO QUESTIONS ASKED!!

I could go on, but it just pisses me off...

would just getting a muffler put on void the warranty? really its just clamped on good and could be taken off and the stock one welded on pretty easy.

Dealers absolutely DON NOT make the same for warranty repairs as they do for customer pay repairs. First of all the labor times(amount of time dealer is payed for performing work) for warranty repair are generally 25-40% lower than for Customer pay. IE: Camshaft replacement on an L61, under warranty it only pays 1.7hours. As a customer pay job we wouldnt do this for less than 3.0hours(this is an industry standard time,MotorAlldata, not a money hungry dealer.) Thats almost a 45% discount. How bout another common part, the clutch. GM warranty time is 5.4hours, customer pay time is 8hrs, almost 35% less for warranty. And the labor rate that a dealer is paid by GM is also less than the "door rate" or the rate which is advertised that customers pay per hour of labor. In general this is 5-15% less. For example My dealers door rate is $97/hr. GM warranty only pays us $82/hr.

Dealers do warranty work and try to help you because they want to earn your cash business and because some money is better than no money. Trust if dealers could refuse to do warranty work and had enough customer pay work to survive, they would.

ONLY 82 dollars an hour! OMG I feel so sorry for your stealership!

To get the topic back on track.. Bottom line .. If you modify your car, expect that your dealership will NOT fix your damages under warranty. If this happens, then you always have the option of fighting their decision. This may be a very time consuming process.

You could always ask the service manager at your dealership what their policy is on modifications.. and mention specifically which ones you were curious about.. Some dealerships will be more leniant in modifications.

I am glad to know that you understand the plight of the modern dealership and the technicians who make a living fixing your car so well. If it werent for supportive comments like these I wouldnt be able to make it through the day, and I would probably stop trying to help all the @ssholes who come through my bay and think I am thief just because I wear a black and grey GM uniform. :D
