i could almost swear that i read somewhere that we lose torque with any larger piping

There is a sweet spot for all cars, I honestly don't know what it is for the 2.2, but yes if you go too big you will start to lose torque, especially on the low end. This is because a bigger pipe will lessen the scavenging effect in the cylinders resulting in a loss of torque.

header is pretty much a header. it all depends on how much you want to spend and what your power goals are..
