heres the only other pic i have and it doesnt really help either lol. but i still have alot of plans to dress it up under there but right now im focusing on performance(engine build and turbo) and exterior (custom paint job, rims, tint). then ill focus on dressing up the engine bay and move to the interior. and i might have to have it all repowder coated because it wont match the blue im getting done on the outside

Wow, these are some of the nicest Cobalts I have ever seen!!! The only thing that can match these is my brother's '05 Dodge SRT-4(Neon). Upgraded with 310hp.

What's the deal with the "smaller" air filter?
Is this better than hooking it up to the intake tube?
I don't even know what that part of the engine is for.

That smaller filter is a crank case breather, I believe. Guys correct me if I'm wrong, the OE hose dumps air into the intake after the MAF. The dumped air, coming out of the cover sometimes carries oil with it. Besides looking better, he nor a few of us, like the idea of oil being randomly dumped into our intake. The filter is removable and washable and a nice dress up piece for the engine bay.

You are mostly correct...that hose is part of the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system. At idle air is drawn from the intake into the crankcase and is sucked into the throttlebody by a calibrated hole in the intake manifold. At speed piston blowby air in the crankcase goes back through the hose into the intake to be burned. Sometimes when in WOT you can get a SMALL amount of oil ingested -- but it usually is in vapor form otherwise you'd have oil pooling in your intake tube. Having the small filter just vents that nice gaseous blowby mixture into the atmosphere rather then burning it in your engine. Your car is calibrated to burn that mixture -- so actually your car runs richer (VERY small difference) to compensate for the lack of the crankcase blowby.

there are a few other reasons as well, the crankcase blows out HOT air, now what is thep purpose of having hot air pushed back into the motor?

specially if you have a cold air intake now you have luke warm air going into the throttle body, to me this just defeats the purpose and is the main reason other than the possible oil and various other things. this is also why IF i had SAI i'd do this same thing.

over various cars i have had and various people i have known to do this its good for about 1 - 2 hp... now again this varies by vehicle. and i don't know of anyone that has actually ever dyno'd but i've heard quite a few people state this... i know 1-2 isn't much but hey its a cheap mod and every little bit helps.
