08/2.4 oil filter retainer r&r

Hi, I know I'm a noob here and a rookie 08 Cobalt sport owner so this is a fwiw from a noob.

If you have an 08/2.4L, you will not be able to get the filter retainer off with a standard (shallow) 1-1/4" or a 32mm(?) socket. The #4 intake runner is in your way. A 1-1/4" crows foot works in this situation...but be careful & make sure you have a good bite on that plastic nut. I'm sure that there is a special tool but I'm too new to this car and have not done enough searching yet.

Cheers
Tom

There is actually 2 different tools you can use, the most common being the crow's foot(and ftr: that is the tool the dealer uses for the job), the other method, is a really big freakin pair of slip-joint pliers!

When i worked at a chevy dealer ship for a few years we would always have mac tools and snap on come in weekly mac tools offer's a 2.2l filter socket, it works nice (obviously), gets plenty of clearance between the intake and the top of the filter.

There are a couple different generations on the DIC (Drivers Information Center) some models you can cycle through the display until the oil life apears and hit the gas three times within 5 seconds and the oil life will reset to 100% New gen scroll through to oil life and press and hold the return arrow button until it resets.

but that's the 2.2L, how about the 2.4L? cause when i went looking, the 2.4L's filter cap is a different size, and the socket wouldnt work with the manifold in the way. I used a good ol fashioned crows foot, then made a wrench for it by buying a brand new wrench that fits, and then bending it twice.

As for the DIC oil life reset, the 2.4L can be set either with the DIC controls, or via the gas pedal, i have done both with my 2.4L

the 2.0 is a HUGE pain in the ass to do, its right under the blower, i used slip joint pliers that was a pain, for the 2.0 the best bet was a 32mm socket but getting it out is another story
