Thumbs down Key Stuck in Ignition in on Position, Manual Cobalt.

I have a manual 5speed 2008 cobalt. The key is stuck in the ignition in the on position, so I can not turn the car off with out stalling the motor and then disconnecting the battery to prevent it from draining. I have read that there is a button in the steering wheel column that can be pushed to release the key. Does this button even exist? I have removed the small access panel and have not been able to locate the button. Is there a diagram or image of it anywhere? If this button would not help because the key is stuck in the on position, what are my options for getting the key out (for now) and then fixing the problem?

how about trying to wiggle and turn the steering wheel left or right to get it out? I dunno why cars lock the key and cant start until you wiggle the steering wheel..... anyone know why?

killarowa, yes I have tried wiggling the key as well as turning the wheel from side to side with no luck. I believe that acts as a release for the key locking mechanism and have read that you can feel it engage/disengage under normal circumstances.

orangebalt13, as stated; I have removed the access panel on the bottom of the steering wheel column but can not find the plunger. I have tried using a flash light with no luck. Thank you for stating that is white, I have been trying to find anything more descriptive than "it's a plunger". I can not even see anything white, only black plastic and metallic parts.
