Spare Tire and Jack

My sense of it is is that the can of green slime (spare tire in a can) that came with my Cobalt in lieu of an actual spare tire and jack isn't going to cover many blowout situations. I'm considering my options for an acutal tire and jack...maybe something from a junkyard or maybe something after market, if it's available.

I'm pretty sure a spare and jack was an offered option? Can anyone confirm this? Will a full spare and jack fit in space under the truck floor? Will only a donut work?

TIA

Your best bet is at the junkyard. If you pull it out of a Cobalt it should fit in a Cobalt. Mine has donut and I doubt a full size tire would fit.

Are the lug holes in the spare universal with 5 and 4 lugs? Because that might be something you might want to look for...

I've been thinking about doing this since I got the car and I think starting this thread got me off the dime.

I called a local junkyard today and they asked me: how many lugs? I'll have to pull the hubcap.

I picked up a used 16" 4x100 Rim for an 08 SE off eBay for $100.00, and when I got tires for mine last week I kept one of them to put on the rim. The full size will not fit int he spare tie area if you rock a 16" wheel or bigger... so you have to just lay it on top of the carpet.

I got mine from Evergreen Auto out of New Hampshire... He underrates the condition of his used wheels. He rated it a B- This thing had no scratches or scuffs on it and it was perfectly round and balanced with minimal weight.

Mine was without a spare when I bought... no jack or wrench either, so I stopped by Advanced and grabbed a 2 ton floor jack and a four way lug wrench. for $35.00

I am going to order a normal spare off eBay too, or see if a local U-pull it has any just so it doesn't buckle the trunk board from the weight of the full size.

Hub cap should have the same amount of fake lugs as real ones.
And i doubt a full size spare would fit too.

Even a 15 inch full size will not fit ( I tried it). Donuts are lug specific. Check local slavage yards for spare and jack kit

I've been rotating the tires but forgot when I replied earlier about how the hubcap stays attached to the rim/lugs.

I called around to the local jyards and they want anywhere from $75 to $100 for a used spare. No one had one on hand and so they want a retainer (CC#) to locate one. Can't blame them but I'm not sure about that arrangement.

Ebay has a few in the $30-$50 range w/$20. shipping. They also have a few jacks. I'll probably go that route.

Thanks for all the info.
