I rebuild automatics occasionally and can assure you it's not the fluid (or failure to change the fluid) that causes problems -- it's the lack of fluid. Just keep an eye out for fluid leaks.
In transmissions with high mileage it is usually the rubber piston seals that go. They get hard over time and crack.
What do you think about using addictives that condition the seals with the tranny oil every few thousand miles?

There is a word for them....contaminants...lol. IMO a waste of money. Tranny fluid itself is very good to seals. Heat and age harden the seals over time. Additives can cause a hardened seal to split.
