I have a 2009 2.2L 5 speed, I get 40-42 on the freeway, and about 32 in town....

Depends on a few things but simple answer is between 45 - 55 mph.

Pump tires to at least 38 psi and try to time traffic lights to start to see some real mpg gains.

If I run at 55mph I can see 53+mpg Canadian consistently.

Good advice guys! Good to know I'm not the only person driving my cobalt xfe at those speeds lol. I try to stick around between 55-60 mph...I have a 25 mile commute to work and if you stay consistent it makes a difference. Tire pressure also makes a difference...the 38 psi recommendation is about what I run at. Also, keep consistent on oil changes..I use full synthetic, the cobalt doesn't really require it, but a full synthetic (I use mobil-1 5w30 ) improved engine efficiency. Also, remove any unnecessary deadweight from your car...clothes, shoes, school books ( lol ), and don't hit the gas so hard right after you shift ( if you have a stick ). Be light on the gas..you'd be surprised how lightly your foot has to touch the pedal to keep the car rolling. And most importantly, be patient! Leave early and allow yourself extra time to get to where your headed...don't needlessly hold people up in traffic but when you're on the highway and it's open road, take your time..hope this helps guys and gals!

And change your air filter and use a fuel system cleaner ( typically $6 - $10 at Walmart..I use Lucas upper cylinder lubricant or chevron) every oil change!

For automatics best mpg is lowest speed when torque converter lock up occurs. In mine it's at 76 kms/h (47mph).
