Amplifiers Power and Stock Radio

Hello, first, i would like to know if its dangerous to put an amp more powerfull than the total amount of watts supported by the speakers plugged on it. Will it cause damage to the speakers? Second, If i buy an amp, should i buy a new head unit too because im still with the stock radio and i dont know if i really need to change it and then plug the amp on it. Is it really better ? Does it changes anything ?

it would be best if you have the cash to go for replacing all the speakers, but i have 2 12's hooked to a 760 watt amp with all the stock speakers in it and the stock head unit and it doesn't sound half bad. had it in for bout 2 yrs and everything is running strong. feel free to ask me any questions if you need to.
