Need Help with Installing Subs and Amp

hey i just bought a 2005 cobalt lt about a week ago and i have dual 12" rockford subs and a rockford amp that i want to install.. i took it to car toys and they said it would be a little over $100 to hook it up. im looking to save some money by hooking it up myself i looked at the diy section at the one thread about hooking them up but people kept saying the way he explained wasn't safe.
could someone help me out with this?
i need to know how to do it and everything i need.
-thanks

I did my own with the converter thing and it seemed like it took power away from the back speakers and it sounded bad so if your not sure about it get a professional or just find a buddy thats selling a dvd player for cheap in my case. I'm so lucky
