Can I Use Styrofoam As Dynamat???

i probably asked this before but right now im in an auction for the dynamat trunk kit (75 w/shipping)

well my friend said "why dont u just use a thick layer of styrofoam?? or some roof shingles that are peal and seal, the looks wont matter because they are hidden any ways, as long as it works....,"

any ideas??

you get what you pay for. the roof shingles will melt and get goopy and they dont work that well. Styrofoam really doesn't absorb sound all that well either
