Turn signals stay on

The turn signals on my 07 don't turn off when you turn, no matter how far the wheel is turned. I have to click it off, both directions. Are they supposed to be automatic off or are they manual ? Seems like something is not right here. Does anyone have a fix that doesn't involve taking the entire car apart ?

They are suppose to return automatically after a quarter turn. Here's my pose on this hope it helps.
This should take all of an hour if you are careful.

Coby7. Good to see your images for this.
BTW FYI.....Rock Auto has a brand new ACDelco D6245E for ~$25. And others for less.

Coby7, Thanks a ton for all the information, very clear. I thought this was an easy fix, it's nice to have a clear direction rather than digging I the dark. Actually this will be a nice clean job for a change I just finished a nasty power steering pump on my Dodge Cummins.
Thanks.....

Hey 66Tbird, check out this gem I saw today. 56 Thunderbird ,museum quality. Talked to the owner, he's 82, he drives it everyday said he hates to see it sit and get older, makes him feel young. A rare bird indeed.

Coby's thread helped me out whenever I had the exact same issue.

I bought my replacement turn signal stalk from Amazon:
