insurance said if taken to a preferred auto shop, no out of pocket expense. Problem is, closest one is 40 miles away

Uea looks pricey, but whos insurance is paying the bill? You have the right to take your car to ANY body shop by law. A "preferred" shop means they have a deal with the shop to not pay as much, sometimes it is good for owner sometimes is is not. But if body shops in your area are not that good, then bite the bullet and take it the distance.

glad to hear everyone was ok.
fyi, after my incident with a deer, i took my car to a preferred shop. and regret it. they did a shitty job on the paint.(paint is fine, shitty job masking) and im not impressed with parts (driver side mirror doesnt match the oe on passenger side, smaller) they used. of coarse i didnt notice till it was to late. thats the last time i go with the "convenience" of the preferred shop. gmac was my insurance at the time.
oh, and it took 2 days longer than originally stated.

every body shop has different return times and it all depends on the damage bot to the sheetmetal and anyunderlying structures. also depends on the shop's backlog.

The last time I took a car to a "preferred" shop I wasnt happy with the service either, but sometimes it comes down to money and convenience. Glad everyone is ok though, that's the main thing.

wow glad to hear everyone was ok. to be very honest i would take it to the dealer. after getting hail damage on my car and taking it to the suposed best in the city paint shop i will never go back. if anything happens to my car that i can't fix myself it is going to the dealer.
