CEL came on. Help!

My car threw a CEL yesterday. I just scanned the code with Actron OBDII Scanner, and I got the codes P0340 and P0341. (2005 Cobalt 2.2L)

(According to the Chilton's Cobalt Manual)
P0340-"CMP" signal problem from ignition module, 2005 and 2006 2.2L models
P0341-"CMP" signal problem from ignition module, 2005 and 2006 2.2L models

Don't know why they are both the same thing. However, I've tried looking for the camshaft position sensor on the car as stated in the book, but can't find it. So I don't know if its loose, the PCM had a fluke, or bad wiring. Car seems to run fine, but has trouble starting up sometimes. I did recently put in some pulstars to see if they do what they really do, and the CEL came on after 40 miles of driving. Although I have had the start issue before putting these in. I plan on putting the original spark plugs later, to see if that's the problem. Any feedback on this issue would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Do the 2005 models even have CMP sensor? I looked in the chilton manual and couldn't find one at all. I can't find any specific information for this sensor either. Also I noticed that I have an oil or junk build up on the side of the engine right below the ICM, could that be the problem? I don't want to have to take in to the dealer unless I have to, because I'm not really sure if the car is still under warranty or not.

The 05/06 2.2 doesn't have a camshaft position sensor.
The P0340 sets from:
Intermittent crank sensor (CKP) signal
High resistance in the #1 secondary ignition system
Low resistance in the #4 secondary ignition system
Corroded or loose #1 or #4 secondary ignition components

The P0341 sets from the same problems as above and:
Harness routed too close to the secondary ignition components.

Since you put in different spark plugs I suspect something is not right with them. Use the factory iridium spark plugs and see what happens. Normally if the CKP is involved you would also see a P0336 DTC.

The 2.2 uses #1 and #4 sparkplugs as well as the crank position sensor to determin camshaft positioning and sequence the fuel injectors. If a problem exsists with #1 or #4 sparkplugs OR an intermittant CKP then you get the P0340/1 DTC.

Wow! Thanks for all the info, although I find it kind of strange that we don't have a CMP in the 05-06 models, I'm gonna swap them out and put the originals in on Saturday see what happens. Does the P0341 mean that there's bad wiring some where or that it needs to be rerouted? Where did you get all this information too, cause I could use it in case I encounter another problem in the future.

Everything I printed was out of the factory service manual...I highly recommend getting one.

Go to CED and look up books/manuals or go to GM techbooks.com. They are pricey but the information in them is more than you get out a Chiltons or Haynes...

Since you have both the 340 and 341 I don't think it looks like your harness is routed wrong.
