Grinding Sound Mystery

Car is a 2005 Base 2.2 Auto. Runs and shifts fine except at slow speeds there is a grinding/whining noise that sounds like its from the transmission. Its done it for the last 40k buts its gotten a bit louder.

Has anyone else had a similar problem with a noise like this from the transmission?

I will check the wheel bearings but it really sounds like its coming from the transmission. I can hear it from right under the middle of the floor.

Well, the story is this: my sister bought the car and soon after she did I rode in it and noticed the noise, very faint, car drove fine though. Now I'm buying it from her and drove it the other day and its a little louder, not super loud but still there at certain times. Still drives great. I think I have to drive another Cobalt to see if its just normal for the car or not but I've driven a lot of cars and its just a sound I'm not used to hearing even though its not very loud.
