Tires?

So I came to this site because I know crap about Cars...esp my Cobalt. I was curious if my recent purchase (today) was ok. The Wheels that were on the cobalt ( 07 LS ) were 205/60r16...bad shape so I figured I would replace them today. Spent $430 on all new tires. I went up to a 205/65r16 and when I was driving home I heard a 'grind'...in which I hadn't heard all day since driving home. When i got out of my car I looked at the front tires and realized the tire was REALLY close to (i think you all call it the strut?)..I would say 1/2 in from touching my tire...on both sides. Is this normal or is my tire too big?

Was it only under a certain condition? I.e. turning, accelerating, decel, combination? Come from both sides? Was it metal on metal or sound like rubber on metal?

It made the noise when I was turning left into my driveway. More like a rubber on rubber (if that makes sense). I drove home on a curvy road and heard nothing...Braked perfectly fine and accelerated fine. It was when I turned 'quickly' I noticed it.

Did it clunk at all at any point? Could be a sway bar bushing or something. Turn your wheel all the way left and right and keep it cranked while you see if you're rubbing

205 is your width in mm, 60 is your aspect ratio in mm (basically, the height of the tire's sidewall), and 16 is the wheel diameter in inches.

For 16" wheels, you've got the recommended width on our vehicle. Recommended aspect ratio for those is 55mm. I honestly can't say if going up to 65 would be problematic. Our wheel gap is so huge, I can't imagine. Did this shop recommend that size and/or inspect for proper tire movement?

You could have someone watch range of motion on the tires while you turn the steering wheel to double check and see if there's rubbing.

Without knowing any stock or actual alignment spec's, what you described doesn't sound bad. That small of an increase in tire width doesn't sound like it should rub. More info would help... wheels turned, straight, cold or warm weather, any pull, vehicle mileage, on bumps, how often etc. Doesn't sound like a tire problem from the description though.

Hopefully I posted this right...anywho to answer some of your questions it has been cold outside. I dont hear rubbing while driving straight (at least what i can hear). I saw some rubbing marks behind my front wheels on the fender. On the back wheels (no pic) I hadnt seen any. I am sure i can fix the fender to prevent more rubbing but my concern is the closeness between the strut and wheel.

That distance never changes so you're fine. Fix that fender and all shall be well.
