Odd Idle and Surging..

Hey guys so I have an 05 cobalt 2.2 ..
Lately she has been idling weird and also she tends to idle high and then try to stall .. I am stumped. I have used fuel treatment , cleaned the throttlebody , MAF , and my spark plus are gapped .040 .
Sometimes when I place the car in PARK it revs to about 1400 rpm and then drops to 500 or so and nearly stalls .. any ideas on what it might be ? Im sure its related but my lights dim as well when shes about to stall... thanks

that is interesting, i believe you are right with the lights dimming when it idles roughly, have you tried testing your alternator? just a conclusion im jumping to...maybe your alternator is going bad and the battery voltage is low because its not being charged up? reason i say that is because i had a navigator with a sub system and during the day my alternator died (i did not know) and when dusk came and i turned on my headlights i had a semi rough idle and all my lights were dimming in and out(probably all the demand was on the big battery)..it did start tho....so it could be?

just a shot in the dark

i replaced my alt and all was good again... hopefully its an easy fix for you and nothing internal :/ best of luck

Had a sticky EGR valve on an old Saturn SL. Had to clean carbon buildup from it, and it fixed issue of erratic and spastic idle on that car.
Does cobalt 2.2 have an EGR valve? If so, might be worth cleaning if it's dirty.

Don't think the 05 Cobalt has an EGR

Had a lot of similar issues... actually, it's what brought me to this forum Mine turned out to be MAP sensor wires??? Spent about 400 bucks on everything else to eventually fix the problem with about 50 cents worth of wire :/

I had the same type of problems with a 2005 base model, I filled the tank with Ethanol free fuel and it runs like it just got a tune up! Very Nice!
