Where is the cheapest place to get a Spare Key made?

I have the base model Cobalt and the key has one of those + signs on it. I'm used to old school keys where i can get a spare made at Walmart for a couple of bucks.

I'd like to avoid the dealer if possible. What is the cheapest way to get a copy of the key?

Thanks!

I got one from home hardware for like $2. It doesn't have the plus so I can only use it to unlock my doors but it will save me if I ever lock my keys in the car.

For some reason, I feel like Coby7 might be able to do it for you. I know he's done key fobs before. You might check with him to see if it's possible. Otherwise, there's a special tool you have to have to do it. Might check a local Facebook page to see if anyone in your area has one.

A locksmith can make you a copy a bit cheaper than the dealer and these are easily programmed to the car.

Just found this. They make a Cobalt key for approx 20 dollars. I'm guessing this as cheap as it gets. Anyone out there found a cheaper one?

My understanding is that I can order the key online and then bring it to a hardware store (along with my original key) to have it cut. I can then program the new key by inserting into the ignition per instructions in the owner's manual.

Edit:

My understanding is that the duplicate key can be programmed as follows:

Insert the original key in the ignition and turn the key to the "ON" position. Do not try and start. Just the ON. wait for all dash lights to turn off. It usually takes about 5-10 seconds. Then after the lights turn off, turn off the ign and remove the key. Insert the cut key and do the same. Do not try and start, just turn to the "ON". After the lights are off turn off the ign and remove the key

The last one is wrong, you don't need 2 good working keys, it's not a Dodge. The first procedure is right and I just count to 3 for both keys and it seems to work fine. 3rdly I wouldn't buy that particular key from Amazon, you need the one with just a hole not a slot.

The GM ignition recall replaces the slotted keys for a good reason. This is what you need.

Speaking of the recall, if it hasn't been done yet and you go get it done they might still just give you 2 keys anyways. I gave them one and got two back when they did the recall haha

Coby

Thanks for the reply to my post. However, if you look at the expanded view of the Amazon key, it also has a circled + sign. Is there a reason the slotted keys are worse than the one with the hole in it? (74% of the 69 reviewers gave the key from Amazon a 5 star rating). I'm just trying to learn and appreciate any insight. i haven't dealt with a smart key before.

BTW, I edited my previous post and deleted the incorrect information so that no one would inadvertently try and program a key incorrectly.

Thanks rrob

the recall has been done on this car, I just one to have an extra spare just in case, for a total of 3 keys.

The reason for eliminating the slot is to avoid levering. With the single hole in the middle you can pull on the key chain all you want it will not turn the key in the ignition. The slotted key on the other hand will pull on one side of the key and could theoritically turn the ignition off. So get the one with just a hole.
