Eng Power Reduced / Engine Disabled

I figured I would post this up in the event that anyone experiences it and they turn up this post in a search.

Yesterday, while driving my car abruptly lost power. A message Eng Pwr Reduced blinked on the console and the car started dinging. Then the engine cut out and Engine Disabled popped up.

At first all I did was disconnect and reconnect my battery, and it worked. But then, the same thing happened about 20 minutes later. This time, the check engine light came on. My first instinct was to take it to autozone and have them check the engine with their code checker.

Then, just because I was curious, I opened up the gas cap door, and sure enough, my gas cap was wobbling loose on the filler neck. A quick tighten and the problem is now gone.

This is just a warning to anyone who has this issue, that your gas cap may have been screwed on incorrectly by some incompetant gas pump attendant.

Damn New Jersey and their Full Service laws...

Hamilton.

Yeah it's funny. I bought the car in PA, and when I drove it off the lot the first thing I did was put gas in it. This was the first time I've ever done it myself actually, and I am 21 believe it or not. I had to scratch my head for a second and read all the directions to find out how the damn thing worked. Funny, I've swapped three transmissions, did an engine swap on my iroc, welded up an X pipe for a buddies chevelle, installed front end suspension on same chevelle, installed a transmission shift kit on my iroc, head/cam/carb swap, basically every type of engine work you can think of, but I have never pumped my own gas.

Uh oh, bad news guys. Yesterday, about a week later, this happened while idling in a parking lot of a 7-11 with the a/c on. I did the same procedure, except this time the gas cap was tight. Every time I tried to start the car it would sputter and die, seems to be a fuel issue.

Took it into the shop and am awaiting a call. Luckily I bought the extended warranty on the car. Also, my faulty power locks were covered so I saw this as an opportunity to get that done as well. Deductible is only $100 too, so not too bad.

Details when I hear from the shop.

Oh really? Tell me how you do. I'm taking mine on the 14th.

UPDATE:

Called the shop, says it threw a code that told them the computer was bad and they needed to replace it. I am waiting on my warranty company to get back to them to see if its covered, but according to their website, it looks like it's not =(

The guy tells me the Chevrolet dealership charges 300$ for a new computer. If thats the case, I'll just put it in myself. I tried looking on ebay for them but I only turned up one for $80 and it came out of a Saturn, so idk if it would match up.
