Angry Questions About Turbo Charging a 2.2

Ive been looking into getting more power out of my 2.2 ecotec and leaning towards turbo charging it. the problems i have come across are where im from no one seems to know much about the 2.2 platform and the ones that know some are telling me the 2.2 cant support a turbo at decent psi so it would be pointless throwing a turbo kit on it considering the horsepower gains would be minimal. now since the 2.0 is throwing out around 300 stock and my 2.2 is throwing out around 150 what would i have to do to my engine to get it beefed up enough to support say 15 psi without blowing something? whats the main problem anyway? im not understanding how the 2.0 can withstand it but the 2.2 cant...... any help in this matter would be appreciated

First off, your not going to find much information here since I think only 2-3 members here have turbo'd their 2.2s. Check out jbody.org or it might be .com...

The have a LOT of info on the 2.2 engines, and they've done everything to them..

To answer your question on the 2.2 vs 2.0 question? Well its simple, GM designed the 2.0 with forced induction in mind, so it has forged parts that can withstand the stresses of extra air pressure. As for running 15psi in a 2.2, I think all you'd need would be pistons and rods, but don't quote me on that.

the 2.2 can't withstand it because its not meant too, GM didn't make it expecting people to boost it when they sell the 2.0 boosted ones. GM uses the 2.0 for all boosted applications making it stronger on the inside to cope with the boost. Why waste stronger internals on the 2.2 when GM doesn't plan on people boosting it. With that said you can run about 13 psi on a 2.2 or about 250 crank hp before you will need new internals. As for new internals, get rods first. They are the weakest links. Then pistons, maybe new valvetrain stuff as well. Psychocam has turbo'd his 2.2
Also are you auto or manual?

if you ran that high of a psi you'll need new internals to cope with the added power. And you will also need to replace the clutch immediately after you install the turbo

PS. the aftermarket available for the 2.2 is much greater than the LSJ or LNF

all of GM's drag motors are 2.2 based...

There is a 2.2 eco at the salt flats, probably more by now pushing 1000-1200 hp. But that guy is uber built. And that engine is in a streamliner. If one desires to find out out to get killer power out of an engine, resources for the time trial associations are a place to look also. Out there they have no limits on power.

Someone say Turbo 2.2L?! Im prob the most known person on here when it comes to the 2.2L turbo as i was the first 2.2L sedan to do it back in the day. The 2.2 is a very strong motor. I had a garrett turbo kit on mine with a stock motor. Pushing 11psi and put down 249whp 254wtq. Plenty of power and was fun. You will need tp upgrade your clutch tho. I was running a Spec stage 2. Besdies that i had ZERO issues with my setup. It was very fun and i miss the car alot. PM me if you have any questions
