Very N00bish Question, but I Had to Ask

What exactly is a tune? Where can I get it done and when is the right time? At some point soon I know my car won't run right without one, even now with just a CAI my ECM is freaking out, I don't even want to think about how she would act when I start building her up. Again, sorry for the n00bish question and thank you in advance for the answer.

A tune is basically, where soemone logs into your ecm and changes various factors, like timing, gas to air ratio etc... They can tune your car to certain mods you have to keep your car running good and go faster. Mind you I aint no pro at tuning, I still do have the basics of what it is. As for where to get it, it all depends on the year of your car, I know thay some cars can only use trifecta tuning. And the older models are able to use both, trifecta and HPtuners. I would just google to see if there are any tuners near you if, not you can always buy a ecm off of the tuning company that comes with a tune

I'd rather get the opinion of one of you, my fellow Cobalt enthusiasts, family members, than some anonymous whistleblowers on the Internets. Forgive me if that sounds silly.

Tunes are just reflashes of the ECM that allows for changes in values to be made that will differ from the factory settings. It also allows for recalibration (to an extent) of certain sensors to improve reaction times, and abilities of the computer to further allow the car to run to it's fullest extent possible. Tunes are also used to help remove certain codes that are phantom codes that pop up for no apparent reason at all (mainly on FI cars as once you start running a good amount of boost they get phantom Knock (aka False Knock)), so you tune out those codes to keep your SES/CEL from popping on.

Depending on the tune/tuner, you can get anything from a "canned" tune, which is basically the same tune everyone else gets (GMPP Stage kits), or you can get a personalized tune that mates with your exact driving styles.

We're all whistle blowers on the internet...what do you think car forums are?

I don't know anyone here from Adam.

It's called: form your own opinions after reading those of others.

Common sense really.

I use google for literally, everything.

But my opinion...what are you goals for the car, what are you wanting out of it...and what is your budget?

Answer those so we can give you a much better opinion than a shot in the dark; how's that?

Fast, cheap, or reliable. You can only have two of the three...and...you get what you pay for...quality over quantity 99% of the time...two car quotes to live by.
