How To: Paint Your Trunk Lock

Ok guys and gals, here is a simple and quick how to for painting your trunk lock.

Painting Materials required:


Wax and grease remover - (for cleaning the part of all dirts and oils)
Lint free towels - (for wiping the part down)
Can of Air duster - (I use it to make sure there is no dust particles on the part, but you don't have to)
Masking tape - (for masking off the cylinder so you do not get paint in there)
Steel Wool - (I used the ultra fine steel wool)
Sandpaper - (I recommend high grit sandpaper. Something around 600-1000. That way you don't run the risk of scratching the part)



Paint:

1 Can of primer
1 Can of color matched spray paint - (I get my paint at NAPA. You'll have to call around to see who can mix color matched into a spray can)
Masking tape - (for masking off the cylinder so you do not get paint in there)
1 Can of clear coat - (this is to shine it up and protect it from the elements)




Step 1:

A] Open your trunk. If you have the trunk liner you will have to remove that by just pulling down around the clips to get them to pop out. Don't worry if you break one, they are available at auto parts stores and home improvement stores.

B] If you don't have a trunk liner move onto step 2.



Step 2:

Ok now look up in the cut out and you will see a clip. That is what is holding the trunk lock in place. All you have to do is pull that little tab and it should come right out. You might have to use a little force.
Now once you have removed that clip, the trunk lock cylinder should come right out. Just pull.


Step 3:


Now that you have your lock cylinder out it is time to prep it for paint.
Start off by wiping the part down with the wax and grease remover. Make sure to get all the small areas, including where the key goes in. You want to get all that caked up dirt out of there. You can use a toothpick if you have to. Repeat this process a few times until you are sure the part is clean enough. Wipe it down one final time with the lint less towels and leave it sit for a few minutes.



Step 4:

Now that the part is clean you can go ahead and lightly start to sand it down with the recommended sandpaper. Make sure to get all the edges and grooves. After you have sanded the entire part down, go ahead and wipe it down again with the wax and grease remover. Rewipe with a dry cloth and then spray with the air duster. Check to make sure you got it all sanded down.
Optional: I also went over the part with ultra fine steel wool, just as one last precaution. Just do this the same as sanding the part. If you do this, also make sure you reclean the part again after you are done.

After you have cleaned it one final time with the wax and grease remover let it sit for a minutes just to make sure any moisture is not present.


Step 5:

Now that you have prepped the part it is time for paint.

Before you even start to paint hit the part with the air duster one last time to ensure no dust particles are present.

First off you are going to have to prime the part. Grab the can of primer you have chosen to use, make sure you shake it really well. *Follow instructions on the can if you new to painting*

Start off with light coats going around the entire lock. Make sure you hit the entire rim of the cylinder. Make sure you have evenly covered the lock with primer and let dry. Drying times vary on conditions such as hot and cold and humidity. *Again if you are new to painting read the can*
If you feel it necessary spray a second coat of primer the same way you did the first time. Making sure you covered the entire lock.
Then let dry.





Step 6:

Now its time for Color. You going to do this the same way you primed the part. Start off with light coats, making sure the entire part is covered.
I highly recommend spraying about 3 light coats to ensure there is enough paint on the lock. Remember it's on the outside of your car.
Once you have finished spraying the color, Let it sit to dry. I left mine dry in between coats about 10 -15 minutes.






Step 7:

Once the part has sat for about 10 - 15 minutes, you can now clearcoat it. Again do this the same as the other processes. Just make sure your spraying light coats. Also your going to want to do about 4 coats of clear to make sure the part is protected.

After the part has completely dried it is time to reinstall ( i would wait a few hours to fully handle the part, just so you don't get finger prints in it while trying to reinstall)




Step 8:


Reinstall your freshly painted color matched trunk lock.
Just reverse the removal and your good to go.



















Disclaimer: This is how i painted my trunk lock. If for some reason, you have messed the paint up by not being patient or spraying heavy coats it is not my fault. I can not stress enough how patience is a virtue and light coats benefit in the end. Thank you and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

i did it....



... actually i just decided to remove the whole keyhole and top wholes and get it welded shut and then painted. lol



my buddy with his srt4 though could benefit from this... here is his now...




i'll post up pic's once we do it to his! thanks for the idea!

Well i don't use a key fob..but i just use the popper.
