Installed WRX shift knob on '08 Cobalt
I've owned three Subarus, so I had a few leather shift knobs hanging around. This one came off an '04 WRX wagon. You can find easy on Subaru forums for sale (or eBay) for ~20 bucks.
There is a ring built into these that can be used with the zip tie trick with the boot.
I managed to file the threads inside the knob down with a round metal file, little by little, until I could jam it securely onto the shifter. I'll have to glue it if it comes off, but it doesn't appear it will (feels more secure than the stock knob at least).
Found some upholstery fabric for $2, cut apart the original boot to into its 4 sections to use as a pattern, and added 2" to the top of the boot pattern to accommodate the height of the new knob, and sewed it back together exactly the way the original boot was assembled. It can all be done by machine, except the collar where the zip tie goes...has to be done by hand.
Re-attached by threading it back into the retainer ring through the staple holes (sorry...can't remember who to credit for that idea). This project was a PIA, but for $2, can't complain. Photo appears lighter due to flash, all is actually a dark black.
