Cobalt Lt Shift Knob Removal PLEASE HELP!!

hi I a have a 2007 cobalt lt 5spd, I have bought a shift knob because my stock one is all worn, sticky and ugly. first I cannot get the boot off the bottom of the shift knob, even with two people turning and pushing down on the clips, second is how is the easiest way to get the knob off, correct me if im wrong but the cobalt shift knobs are just glues to the shifter. people say put vice grips on the skinny part of the knob and beat the vice grips upwards with a hammer and the shifter will slowly come off, anyways if anyone can help me please do, thanks!
