Draining Coolant

I have simple question.

To get to the radiator drain cock valve so I can drain the coolant is it easier to remove the intake and go from above the engine, or remove the splash cover for clearance below.

I know I can just remove a radiator hose but I'd rather not make a mess.

I'm surprised the drain cock is not something I can just easily reach.
