Prospective Cobalt owner

Hey all.

I've been in the market for a Cobalt SS and looked at a Stage 2 2005 Cobalt SS a couple days ago. I must say I was not very impressed and I hope that this was just a fluke car because I REALLY liked the Cobalt SS before checking it out.

Interior
I was most disappointed with the interior. I did not go in expecting it to be high class or anything. I knew it was a bottom barrel GM product but DAMN. It had more rattles than a Babies 'R Us. Seriously, it sounded as though every single body panel and seat had at least 6 rattles. It was among the worst interiors I have seen. My friend's 2000 Cavalier has fewer squeaks and rattles I couldn't imagine somebody paying MSRP for that car when it was new and not feel like they were ripped off.

Exterior
The exterior I have zero problems. I like the looks of the car and have nothing to complain about.

Power
This was the stage 2 that I checked out and I must say that I was disappointed once again. I haven't checked out a regular SS but after the one I looked at I will not. For the horsepower that it has it did not feel like it was putting more than half of them to the road. The car was a dog.


The car just felt like a major piece of shit. Is this normal for Cobalts? I hope it isn't or I will not be purchasing one.

Hey man, I just joined today, but I may be of some help. The rattles are normal. There is just no way around those. Every SS and rental cobalt I have driven has had a plethora of rattles. It is unfortunate, and something GM desperately needs to improve on.

About the slowness, I think that was a one time fluke. I have driven a supposed stage 2 2005 cobalt that felt/was slower than a stock SS. I became skeptical when I noticed there was no CAI and just a supposed upgraded filter. There was also an AEM sticker put on the windshield that read AEM from the inside, MEA from the outside. It also had a CEL for multiple misfires. Sometimes you just drive a bad example and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Go drive another SS and then make your decision.

i wouldnt get a 2005 if i was you. That was the first year od the cobalt, and they're were so many recalls and problems. Go with a 2006.

And yes the power issue had to be a fluke cause these cars haul ass. Watch some youtube videos.

Maybe the cobalt you drove was a "stage 2" ss. They could have told you that, are you sure it was the supercaharged model and not the regular SS?

def a fluke. and actually most of the balts ive been in dont really rattle as much as your saying.

i would second buying an 06 unless ur gunna get a real good deal on an 05

This car definitely had more rattles than other cobalts I have been in but it seems as though every Cobalt I have been in rattles. I don't know if that is because people with rentals do not swerve for pot holes or because of poor build quality. This particular car I found out has been abused though and that may have something to do with it.

Was the 2005 a piece of shit?

you can expect some rattles in these cars because of what they are but it shouldnt be as bad as you've said. but its most likely because of the previous owner.

05's arent a piece of shit but it was the first year for them and like any new car the first year is gunna have some issues. i know people who had an 05 and had minimal to no problems and i know some people who had a lot of problems to where they traded and got something else or kept it and kept going to the dealer all the time for warranty work. myself would try for atleast an 06. unless you get a relly good deal on an 05 and do a thorough inspection and test drive
