New Member-Thinking of Getting a 05 Cobalt

Hello All,

I am looking at an 05 Cobalt(base) with 75K miles for a good price of $4500 with 2 owners. CarFax checked out ok, test drove it & felt normal, except for a small rattle that seems to be coming from the dash/steering column. Also when I tried to adjust the steering wheel, it made a clunk type sound when I maxed out towards the top. Dont know if thats normal/not. Will get it checked at Firestone tomorrow.

I am trying to make a decision tomorrow. What should I look out for, before I pay..

Thanks for your help, appreciate it..

Welcome to the forum.

The clunk is pretty normal. Any adjustable steering wheel with the side locker I've ever seen from GM makes that sound.

Ask if the power steering recall has been done to it yet. If not, have a dealer check to see if it's on the list. Aside from that just check the normal stuff you would on any used car.

Thanks for the reply, good to know that its normal, I buying the car from a small independent dealer, so I dont think he has any information on the recall, but if I do buy it, I will get that done..

Is there anything that I should be aware of with the first year Cobalts? (issues/maintenance etc)

If I do buy it, what maintenance should I be looking at since it has 75K on it. BTW this is my first used car with lots of miles, hence lots of questions..

BTW, your avg MPG's are awesome Cant wait to see what mine would get..

Well, don't get discouraged if you do not get the mpg's you are wanting right away. It takes time to get used to the car, and to get up there.

I don't know of issues with the 05s but give it time, and more peeps will weigh in.

Welcome! I bought my 05 with 80K and the one thing I wish I would have paid more attention to is the suspension. If you take it to a shop to get it looked at make sure they look at the control arm bushings, struts, and endlinks.

What might be causing the shaking in the 05 could be the rotors. Have them check the rotors to see if they are warped if so its an 60-80 dollar fix depending on where you go. Mine had that light shaking as well when i drove at low speeds especially when i was using my brakes. Mine is an 06 with 100K on it. I've put every mile on it and runs awesome no problems as of yet "Knock on Wood".

Just got done with Firestone inspection:

They say its going to a need:

NOW:
~Coolant flush
~Left rear tire
~Air Filter
~Oil Change

Future:

Front Brake pads: 45% left
Rear Brakes pads: 40% left
Rear hubs need to be replaced when brakes are being replaced
Fuel System Service
Fuel Filter
Struts
Shocks

Dealer says he will get these done:
New left rear tire
Coolant flush
Oil Change
Air Filter

Price stays firm @4500

Does it look fair?

What brand tires should I ask him to use? Car is going to be in Des Moines, IA, where its going to be snowing for the next x months..

Let me know..

Thanks
