New Car for Son, Bainbridge, Ohio

Hi everyone,
Thank you for this great forum for the cobalt. Very friendly and helpful group here!
History: 2006 cobalt LT sedan. Blue Granite Metallic. Alloy rims.
This is a car for my 16 year old son that I am trying to convince him that a cobalt is a cool car, great on gas and a solid 2.2L engine. The car has 96,400, one owner who took it to the dealer every 3500 miles for oil changes and rotated the tires every other. She had all the recommended service done at same dealer. (non smoking female)
My mechanic told me it is solid with no issues other than one shock is leaking and the gaskets are gone from the top of the struts.
Drives nice, one small pea sized rust spot on bottom of front doors and interior door lip and rocker panel on one side, is a little rusted (no holes) but not bad according to my body guy. Few scratches but nothing major. Interior very clean, no stains rips or damage.
My old sound system will be going in.
I have a pair of Blaupunkt overdrive 4 way 6x9's for rear (need to figure out how to remove the interior rear deck panel) and a pair of MB Quart PVF 213 US 5 1/4's for the front doors. (I saw another member hid the crossovers under the arm rest) (need to figure out the door panel removal too)
12" Blaupunkt overdrive sub (enclosed in box) for the trunk. I have the distribution block, monster cables, jacks and 100 amp fuse block.
Older pioneer head unit but will probably replace that and need to get a couple amps to power everything. (amps got stolen, Zapco mono and U.S acoustics from old van)
I will have the stereo guy put in the amps and head unit. I think that should raise the cool factor a bit?

Pictures?

And what's he think is a cool car for a first car, a Honda?
Cobalts are one of the most UNDERRATED 4 cylinder cars on the market.

The subs and what not should make him like it alittle more.

I 2 more things and those things are aftermaket rims (if the car doesn't already have them)
And to lower the car Haha.

I'm guessing that you paid for the car and the subs and what not?

That should be an awesome car for your son. Just 2 years ago I handed my 2002 Dodge Neon down to my (then) 17-year old daughter. I took the opportunity to get myself a brand new 2010 Cobalt SS/TC
My daughter loves the Neon, I bought it new in 02 and maintained it well. She just got the odometer to 6 digits as well.

Well good luck with the car. BTW, another great source for information on Cobalts is cobaltss dot net. I have the same sn there.

Good luck with the Cobalt, I hope your son will enjoy it for a long time!

Oh one more thing, the cross overs fit inside the doors. I stuck them to the bottom of the doors on the inside under the speakers with double-sided tape. Works very well and a lot less wiring to run!

He likes corvettes. (never) and Mitsubishi GT3000's. Not a good choice for a first car IMO.
The cobalt does have the factory alloy rims which look good, I will post a pic this weekend.
And yes, we bought it for him ( every new driver needs help coming up with cash) but he gets to make payments. We'll see how that goes
Once he gets used to driving without the radio on, he can buy the head unit and amps and have the stereo guy put them in.
Thank you for your reply,
crunchman

Is it a 2 door or 4 door?
Cuz the 2 doors have a similar look to the Corvette lights.
Tell him if he puts a Supercharger on it he can beet corvettes.
With more mods of course Haha.

I bought a 2007 sedan for my girls and they love it. Of course one of them would prefer a B200 (she's a dreamer), the other would prefer a Cruze Rally sport but she is quite content to have wheels so she can go to Med school. They live at home and I see the Cobalt once in a while when it's empty. Then they give me the keys.

I gave him the password and login name for this site. He will be looking more once he gets his license. ( he still needs to pass my skills test before I will let him get it.) I have been taking him out almost everyday since we got it so he can get used to driving it.
He see's a lot of the cool cars on here and wants to MOD his. HE will need to pay for that. Hate to be a buzz kill for him but you guys spend some BIG money on the MODs. His first official mod was a pair of fuzzy dice and a air frshener under the seat
I did see a thread on here "under $100 dollar MODS", that will be more his speed for a bit.
Question, How do the mods effect resale or trade in value? I am sure a dealer would kill you on them but if you sold to another kid, maybe get your money back that you spent?
Thank you for the reply,
crunchman

His (16 year old, boy) cobalt is a sedan.
I fix houses not cars so most of the mods we do together will be cosmetic. I can do the basic stuff, I put new rotors and pads on the front for him, I lost his attention after the first wheel.
I showed him how to check fluids ect.. He will be doing the oil changes after I show him that in 2K miles.
I'll help him on the stereo upgrade, buying the shorty antenna tonight for him (since I broke the OEM trying to get it off. Replaced the bracket today)
I will spend some time with him on the $100 dollar mod thread, see what he likes.
Thank you for the reply and suggestions,
crunchman

As long as you're patient, you can do some nice things to our cars on a budget. Just piece everything together one thing at a time and you'll be good to go.

---------- Post added at 03:03 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:00 PM ----------

Also most bolt on mods are prettt easy on our cars. If you are knowledgable enough to change brakes you're knowledgable enough to do most of the bolt on mods...
