Learning on a 2006 Cobalt

Hello!

I don't want to drag on too long here, so I'll just write up a nice timeline instead. Everyone loves lists, right? Here it goes.

  • I was born.
  • I met a girl.
  • We fell in love.
  • She had a Cobalt.
  • We paid off the Cobalt.
  • The Cobalt broke down.
  • I knew NOTHING about cars.
  • I knew NOTHING about cars.
  • I knew NOTHING about cars.
  • I helped my girlfriend buy a new car so I could keep the Cobalt.
  • I sold my ridiculously expensive truck.
  • I bought a Haynes manual.
  • I replaced the Cobalt's cylinder head and timing chain.
  • I learned...A LOT.
  • The Cobalt lives but idles rough.
  • I'm still learning.
So this is my Summit White 2006 Cobalt LT with the 2.2L Ecotec engine. I don't have a name for him/her yet, but one day he/she will earn one. It's not much, but it's mine.

So that's about it for now. I'm looking forward to learning everything it'll take to get my Cobalt up and running smooth again. Thanks to everyone here in advance for your support and guidance.

See y'all in the forums!

Welcome to the forums! Hopefully you can get her running perfectly again. How many miles is on her? Any plans for her after you get her back to 100%?

Showoff thread finally!!!! : )

Thank you all for welcoming me!

So I spent countless hours, late nights, and weekends trying to diagnose the rough idle problem after I replaced the head and timing chain on my new old Cobalt. I'm happy to announce that she's running pretty well now! After spending a few hundred bucks on new ignition coils and control modules (Yes, more than one of each.), it turned out I was using platinum spark plugs instead of iridium plugs!

So a note for those of you out there whose delicate Cobalts may be experiencing random misfires or rough idling: check your spark plugs! For my 2.2L 2006 Cobalt LT, they were the "ACDelco Professional Iridium" spark plugs (part number 41-105). Apparently, these engines are very picky and sensitive to spark.

Dustin, she'll hit 120,000 miles in the next few days; maybe this weekend. She's at 119,9XX right now. So my plans right now are to continue replacing things that should have been replaced before or at 120,000 miles. Any suggestions?

Beyond that, I plan on cleaning her up (new upholstery) and eventually handing her over to my 12 year old son who helped me bring her back to life. We've been learning on this thing together and it's been really awesome. I'm sure he'll never forget this experience. I know I won't.

Yes, part of cleaning her up will be cleaning up or replacing headlights. What you got, Parthros? I might be interested.

Thanks again, everyone!

As far as maintenance goes, I'd definitely suggest going through this thread like a checklist and investigating/taking care of each item on it.

https://www.yourcobalt.com/forums/pro...-schedule.html

I've got a sales thread for the headlights, but you won't be able to access that section of the forums until you reach 35 posts. Basically, I bought a pair of brand new Eagle Eye OEM style headlights, but I didn't realize they had the amber lens over the turn signal. Chevrolet omitted the amber lens for the 2008-2010 Cobalts, and I want to keep mine looking the same as it did when I got it. They've got the bulbs as well, so you shouldn't need to replace those for quite some time if you end up buying these. They match the style on your cobalt though.

I'd like to get $45 each or $80 for the pair + shipping, but I'm open to reasonable negotiations. Last I checked, shipping was around $15 each, so $30 for the pair.

Parthros, thanks for the link to the maintenance thread. I'll definitely look through that. I've already got a list of items I'll be tackling this weekend.

In fact, I was also planning on trying to clean up the headlights myself this weekend. Unless I come across a better method, I'll try wet sanding and clear spray paint. If I'm not satisfied with the results, I might consider coughing up 100 bucks to take yours off your hands. Do you have the original box and receipt?

I bought them online, so no receipt, but they do have their original boxes.
