Hello from Vegas
Sup all?! I am somewhat new to the forum. I usually stalk the Saturn forums, as I restore them for side income. Usually the S series, but evolved into the L series then Ion, that brought me into adding Cobalts to my resume. Probably rebuilt over 100 of the 1.9 S engines, 25 or so of the 2.2 Ecotec in the L and Ion family. Only done 8 of the Cobalts, but am a fan as they are almost identical to the Ion, save for the dash not being centered (the glowing difference in the cousins). The last 2 Cobalt rebuilds I did resulted in major headaches for me. So thanks in advance for the help I will seek from all you members.
BTW, the number one issue that puts these Ecotec powered vehicles in my care is timing chain tensioner failure. I don't care what your dad, uncle, friend, or obscure internet post tells you. CHANGE YOUR TIMING SET!!! The odometer is usually around 120K-140K when they fail. I charge people $325 parts labor and fluids to replace if hasn't jumped. If wait til jumps its another $600. And I am cheap shops and stealership double that.
I know preventative maintenance is no fun, especially when quoted so much for a timing set replacement, but the alternative is way worse.
I currently own 3 Cobalts and a Saturn Ion Redline (2.0 supercharged). The Ecotec engines are truly amazing work horses IMO. Just take care of them.
