Cluster

Just did a repair on a 2004 Impala Cluster. I had to replace the speedometer stepper motor and it works fine now. I was wondering if anybody has had failure of these in their Cobalts. The symptoms were speedometer would go up in speed reading all of a sudden, especially in cold weather. Another symptom was some time the speedometer reading would stick to 50 when you would turn off engine, then would make horrible noise when you would turn it on again. I know The Cobalt is a similar design but not sure if it uses the same stepper motor. You can see in the picture the new motor is black, where fuel, temp and RPM are white.

Anybody? No!

Hmm, I've never heard of it happening on Balts. Doesn't mean it hasn't. Just if it has, it's probably not very common.

Fixed an other 2004 Impala cluster yesterday ( Tach and Speedo). Doing a 2004 Cavalier on friday (Temp, Speedo and Tach). These seem to fail quite often.

Just read that Cobalts use a different stepper motor so this might not be a problem on these cars.
