Wishful Thinking

Had a thought the other day, if I removed the air filter on my Bonneville (circular carb element) and detached the WAI (piece of foil pipe that takes warm air from the exhaust manifold to feed the carb) will that result in more power?

Also, unrelated, when I start the car with a cold engine I get an amber dash light in the gauge cluster that says Choke. Putting it in drive at that point results in a 50/50 chance of stalling out. There is no knob or anyway I could control the choke from inside the car. Do I just need to let it idle for a bit or is an adjustment needed?

Car is an '86 with the 3800 V6.

If you have holes in the stove pipe your choke will not warm up as fast as it should.

I see, but it's that very same stove pipe that's feeding my engine with hot air. Can I lower my IAT by disconnecting it at the cost of having to warm up a bit longer in the morning?

I gotta check if someone makes an upgraded carb for my engine. If she can use anything it's a new set of lungs and more fuel.

If you look at it closely you will notice a vacuum flap that shuts off the hot air from the manifold once it is warmed up.

Good to know, thanks.

Is the air filter restrictive?

How much of a job would it be to convert my Bonneville to manual? Use a gearbox from a 3.8 Firebird/Camaro, should bolt-up to the motor with little issue. New clutch and flywheel. Cut a hole in the transmission tunnel for the shifter, add a pedal... how hard/expensive could it be?
