Post 2008 CC with Broken Timing Chain Tensioner?

Hi All -

My 2008 Chevy Cobalt has had this rattling sound after an oil change. The sound is worse on cold days. Unfortunately, the car stopped working yesterday. Girlfriend says the engine jerked once, and turned off. There was also a smell of burning oil.

I did some research and I suspect it is the timing chain tensioner that is messed up. Can you guys please advise me on:

1)What exactly is wrong with the car?
2) How to go about fixing the problem without breaking the bank.

I have already spent over $1k on the car in the past, so I am really looking for cheap, but efficient, options. Are there any DIY options out there as well? Thanks in aniticipation for your help!

You probably jumped timing, no cheap way out. Would have been a lot cheaper to address the noisy cold start.
