Is the Heat Shield Necessary

my car rattles pretty bad at around 1500 rpms. so i got under it yesterday and part of the heat shield by the down pipe is cracked right of the bolt. is it necessary or can i take it off?

ill try to get pics of it tomorrow

it's fine, but try to replace it. use heat wrap or something.
