Massive Coolant Leak

The last couple days I could smell something funny when I would turn the heater on. Then the other night I go a couple blocks to the grocery store and on the way back I notice my coolant temps are about 215 degrees despite it being cold and me barely driving. I pop the hood when home and coolant is just pouring out into the driveway.

Took out the coolant reservoir and under the hood fuse box and couldnt quite see what it was, but it wasnt holding coolant for more than a few seconds.

Took it to a local shop today and its a cracked heater coil. They say they have to remove the whole dash to replace it and then flush the cooling system. $1,100 is the quote and two days work.

I only have some experience with engine work and def dont have a fully stocked garage, so I feel I dont have many choices here.

If I lived in LA like you I would just bypass the heater core. You won't have any heat but as far as I know your air conditioner should still work.
