Exclamation Braking Issues.

Ok, so I've had braking problems for the past year and I'm running out of ideas as to what is wrong and what to do to fix it.

First off, I had worn rotors. It happens, so I didn't mind replacing them.
My car was top notch for about 6 months after that. No braking problems.
Next thing I know, all of a sudden my car starts vibrating after braking from high speeds and was getting so bad that I was losing control of my car at one point. It started wearing off, so I didn't think much of it.

3ish months ago, I got new wheels and tires and had a friend install them.
Ever since then, my car has gone down hill. I started having the vibrations and even a very loud clicking/rubbing/grinding noise every time I stepped on the brake. I got the vibrating fixed for good by changing my brake pads, but I'm still having the annoying sounds when braking. Whether it be braking from high speeds or even 5 mph.

Here's everything I've had done:
-Tires/wheels aligned, rotated, balanced. (Helped for about a day.)
-New rotors in the front. (Took away the vibration for a week.)
-New brake pads TWICE in a month (Made the vibration go away for good, but the noise came back after a week or two)
-Front end alignment.
-Took off the new wheels and tires and put on the old ones. (No change.)
- I've taken it to THREE different places and they've yet to figure out what's going on. My ass.

I've spent over $800 if not more trying to get this fixed. It seems so simple, yet I'm being told it's not. It's gotten to the point where I hate driving my car and try to avoid doing so as much as possible, which sucks.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so, how was is resolved?


Sorry I rambled a bit, but I want to get every detail out so people can get a better idea of what's going on.

How loud is it.

Did you do the pads yourself? If so, did you grease the backside of the pad (where it contacts the caliper piston)?

It's pretty loud. I can have my music like 3/4 of the way up and still hear it and I made someone stand outside to see if you can hear it from outside the vehicle and he was standing a good 5-10 feet away and could hear it pretty well.

I had my uncle do it who is a mechanic, he did put one on wrong, but he re-did it and checked the other to make sure it was on right and he said it was. So, I don't think it's that.

It sounds to me from your description it's coming from the front. Is the noise coming from one side or both?

Can't say what the problem(s) are but if you think it could be your brakes then driving your car may be hazardous for you and others.

You probably already know this but sometimes trying to save some money can be costly. Take your car to a reputable Chevy dealer and give them all the information you've given here. In my experience most reputable dealers will be able to fix a problem like this as well as stand by its repairs.

Have a mechanic with a dial gauge check the trueness of the hub. I am going to bet that it is out of whack. I had a similiar issue with the G5, and it turned out to be the hub.

Also, according to a dealer tech I talked to once, apparently the way GM rotors and hubs are, they have a nasty habit of vibrating because of a combination of rust and the anti-lot rot coating they put on the cars. You have to make sure to use a wire brush to clean the mating surface between the hub and rotor down to bare metal.

Thanks for y'alls help but, I solved the problem. I took it in once again and no fix. I got so sick of the problem that I got rid my Cobalt and got a brand new car. Much faster than the cobalt and much more reliable. Ha.
