Question Random Ticking and Smoking

so me and my friends were standing and it smelt like some thing was burning.
and one of my friends asked if my car was on because they could hear it running and i said no the keys were in my pocket
so me and my friends went to my car and it was smoking and ticking. the inside lights and the indicator lights were all flashing. and the car would not start. the ticking stopped then came back. it was ticking faster but not smoking. it had a terrible smell like some thing was burning but no flames. eventually i finially got it started. and the check engine light was on it went off on its own. and now it takes it a while to start every time. and still has that smell to it sometimes.
anyone have any idea what is wrong with my car?

now the check engine light stays on. even when auto zone shuts it off it comes back on. and it is kicking when it shifts.
could this be the computer in it?

i just put oil in it two weeks ago. checked it and it looks fine.
nothing is wrong with the anti-freeze and as for the transmission i would say is ok. but not for sure. autozone did a test on it and said it could be a couple diffrent things but my ECU is most likely what it is.

It might be the starter but that's just a guess. Is it still under warrenty? Did you consider taking in to the dealer?
