CEL Code P0496

My CEL came on today and I got the code PO496: EVAP High Purge Flow. Last time I filled my tank, the engine turned for a couple seconds and wouldn't start.... tried again and it started, but it took longer than normal.

I have found a couple of threads addressing this, but not anything where this is the only code received... So far I've read that I should replace the purge solenoid valve or the EVAP vent valve. How do I know what I should do first?

do u have aftermarket intake? if so check the MAF sencer. mine was alittle vertical when putting my cai in (its changed around now) and it threw codes like this and ran alittle lean,i repiped it and put the MAF up top so it is horizontal and cleared the codes and the havnt shown up since. if this is true for u then u might be running really lean and when u go to crank the car there might be a lot of unburned fuel making it harder for the car to start. if u dont have a aftermarket intake then idk what to tell you

Yea I have an aftermarket intake, and yes I could see it being a little bit vertical... I'll try making it more horizontal. I just had the code cleared and it didn't come back yet.

thats good, the MAF sencer seems to be sensitive to being vertical for some reason. im not sure why but i dont like it but whatever keeps her running works i suppose, lol

ive had this code for over a year now. i have the same problems filling up, except mine will start up, just wont idle very good for a second or two. ive done scan tool data on this mutiple times and tested and smoked the whole system. im almost 100% sure its just the purge solenoid. so i would try that.

Thanks - that will be the first thing I try if my light comes back on tomorrow.

Do you mind if I ask why you haven't tried repairing that?

I would say otherwise check the seal on your gas cap, as this is part of the evap system and it could be bad...

So the CEL is back today - adjusting the MAF sensor didn't fix. Ordering the purge valve is my next step.

Have you had a message pop up on the DIC "check gas cap"?
