Removing Rear Brake Drums
I went to replace the rear drum brakes on my 09 XFE with 79k miles on it last week and had alot of problems removing the drums. The drums had rusted onto the hub and wouldn't move. I tried banging on them from the front and side, too hard, with an axe, to no avail. There was no access to bang on them from behind, which would have helped, since the backing plate was in the way. On my other vehicles with drum brakes, I was always able to hit them from behind.
To solve the problem, I had to use a torch to heat up the drum around the hub. Combined with banging on it and using a pry bar sparingly, the drums finally came off.
I'm surprised how rusted on they became with a 2 year old car. Combined with the other issues I've had with the car just within the last 2 weeks, I'm not happy (broken ignition, difficulty replacing serpentine belt, stripped shock bolt).
