Hard to tell while still on car unless it is really worn out bad then it will have play. Pretty simple actually, just a dirty job. Disconnect lower balljoint and outer tie rod. Unbolt big nut on axle. Air ram the axle loose, pull it out of hub then pull it out of transmission (just has a pressure clip). If joints don't move smoothly there's your culprit.
If you have access to a hoist start engine,put it in gear and watch if axles wobble.
