Shift Indicator Stuck on a 2010 Cobalt

I purchased a 2010 Cobalt yesterday after my old truck died on me and I was fed up with fixing it.

When I drove around, I noticed that there wasn't any sort of absolute indication of what gear the transmission was in on the shifter, they're all just letters. Once it got dark and the interior lights were on/visible, I noticed that there might be a little red indicator in there, but it appears to be stuck between N and D. I would assume this is fixable. If not I can live with it, I can count to know what gear it's in, but it'd be nice to have it work properly...

If I take it into a shop, what's it going to cost to have them fix this? Or is it something I can do myself without demolishing the interior trim?

Well, there is a bulb in there accessible from the two cup holders. Just pull them out and reach in for the socket if your hand is small enough. But if the mechanism is busted you might have to take the console apart or at least the top part. It just clips in. The console bottom just has a few screws as shown in third picture.

I also have this on my 2009 cobalt LT.
I'm used to it now so I don't really car, but if the is a fix let me know cuz I'm to lazy to find it out on my own.

As your vehicle is a 2010, you are very likely still within the 3 year/36,000 mile Bumper to Bumper warranty. I can check into this for you if you like - I would need the last 8 digits of your VIN to be able to provide the specific warranty parameters.

The last 8 of my VIN is: 7159997

Thanks!

Edit: Unfortunately, I can already tell you what your answer is going to be. It has 37k miles on it :(

On no! Sorry about that. I'd be happy to get you your powertrain warranty parameters, which likely wouldn't help in this situation but is good to know for future reference. However, I see that in the previous post there are only 7 digits, and my systems require the last 8.

Thanks!

Did the dealer sell it to you that way?

If so, check your states inspection criteria. a majority of states that perform safety inspections require that indicator to be functional. If the dealer sold it to you that way and your state requires it to be working they have to fix it for free.

Check with your local Chevrolet dealer. Hopefully they MAY still cover it under "goodwill"... thinking you pay half. they pay half or some combination such as that. Maybe "Chevrolet Customer Service" on here can assist you with something like that.... Ask (her)!
