Igntion Lock Cylinder Sticking

A few months back, my car was hit while parked. Since that time I have been experiencing intermittent sticking in my ignition lock cylinder.

When I shift the car into park and attempt to key back, the key sticks about halfway into the back turn and gets stuck. The only way to get it keyed all the way back is to wiggle the shifter back and forth while in the park position.

A few of the threads mentioned it may have to do with the shifter micro switch being out of position. Is this a good place to start or has anyone else had/solved the problem? My car is AT.

Thanks in advance for any wisdom.

No, you need to change the ignition cylinder. Check with sarah, I think there's a silent recall on a series of Cobalts maybe yours is in it.

Thanks Coby, I'll look into that. I've got a broken hand at the moment, so I'm trying to avoid the usual method of trouble-shooting.

My wife has a similiar issue in her 05. At first I had to wiggle the shifter to get the key out. Now the door chime NEVER turns off even with the key out. Only turns off when the driver door is closed. Still have the same sticky key issue.

Sarah, Do I need to PM you a VIN or can you check ot from this thread?

Thank you,

Jesse

Don't think the 05s are in the recall. Cylinder is just wore out.

Well $hit. 37,000 miles and it is wore out. She drives 1.2 miles a day back and forth to work. We have rebuilt the tranny, the tire rods have been replaced as one snapped, brakes failed, had the power steering recall, and now this. Time for a different car.

Ignition is not wore out by miles it is wore out by how many times you turn the ignition. A new car is going to cost a lot more than a 50$ cylinder that takes 20 minutes to change. 7 years @ lets say twice a day to be conservative is 10,000 times. If she goes out for lunch double that if she takes the car out again once at night double that again. It accumulates and wears. Did you spray light oil in the cylinder once in a while? Regular maintenance, see owners manual.
