Question Starting Issues!

Hi, i'm new to this forum. I just bought a 2008 Chevy Cobalt LT in the last couple of weeks, I bought it as a rebuilt car so it has no factory warranty. It has 60,000K miles on it and it has an issue that just came up where it doesn't want to start the 1st time and sometimes the 2nd time, but it will always ( so far) start the 3rd time. Does anyone know what this may be? it sounds like its not getting fuel. because the second time you will hear it and see the RPM's come up to about 500 then it just dies. but the try after that it will start perfectly. It's a standard by the way and the check engine light isn't on. I should be able to post a video of it tomorrow afternoon if anyone would like me to. Does it sound like the fuel pump? I mean once it gets started it runs perfect.

if you got it from a dealer of some sort, bring it back to them. Since its only been a few weeks, they should be fixing it free for you.

I tried that, he said he wouldn't because it's an as is warranty, but he did say if it was the fuel pump he would replace that? It's not the fuel pump though I don't think because when I go down the road it acts perfect? I don't get it.

Does it only do it after sitting for a long time? Got this out of service manual.

• A faulty in-tank fuel pump check valve allows the fuel in the lines to drain back to the tank after the engine stops.

This sounds like a little Carbon Build up. (According to the dealership when I had this exact issue).

The dealership charges about $120 for this "Maintenance", yes, not a warranty covered repair.

However, I did not buy into this and left it as it was as its not such a big deal, your probably thinking the same thing, Quote "Once in a while it does not start, but I can always get it to start after a few tries". I was running like this for a while, it was not an issue, because it would only do it a few days of the week, not even every day.

I was having another issue at the same time, it was the issue when you are driving and you release the gas to slow down or stop, sometimes the engine would stall, or sounded like it wanted to, it ended up been a dirty Throttle Body. I cleaned it out and it solved my problem where the engine would stall or almost stall when ever I released the gas. I know this is not your issue, but when I fixed that issue, it also fixed my random "Car not wanting to start 1st try issue". So you should try it, maybe it might help. Cleaning your throttle body is very easy and costs nothing, maybe a bottle of carb cleaner to make it easy to clean.

Inside the fuel tank....I wouldn't suggeast you try to fix it yourself.

Good find, sounds very plausible

If its the check valve in the tank you might as well just get a new tank out of the junk yard and replace it.

Maybe idle control valve?

Have you tried turning the key to on position without starting it, for a couple of seconds before you start it. Fuel pump would prime and fill fuel line if it's the check valve then it would start no problem. Maaayyyybbbeeeeee!!!!!
