Oil life indicator question.

Is the oil life imdocator go by mileage or the actual life of the oil?

They calculate the life by a mathematical equation which takes mileage, cold start-ups and engine load. So if you do a lot of highway miles oil will last longer, lots of stop and go oil will not last as long. All based on synthetic I believe but not positive on that last point.

Yes, since cold starts are in the equation and if you keep an eye on the dipstick. Also keep in mind that non-synthetic also degrade with time, so if you use regular oil and only drive 5000 miles a year, change your oil once a year no matter what. So this DIC oil indicator is a guide not a rule. I use synthetic, at 60% (5000Kms)(3000miles)I change the filter and top up. At 20% oil life the car has 11000Kms(7000miles) and oil is dark, so I don't wait for 0%, I change oil and filter.

It might be different but my 05 was based on standard oil I think. I say this becuase the book recomends SAE 5W-30, no mention of synthetic. Agree with your change practice though!

That's the load factor in the equation, same thing would happen if you were pulling a trailer. Higher load means more blowby therefore more impurities in the oil and reduction of oil life.
