Exclamation Shifter Replacement

Is it possible to replace the shifter assembly without disconnecting the shifter cable?

I would assume it's the same for the auto but it's a big fat no on the manual. What does that matter though? They just sit there until you hook it back up anyways. They dont retract.

Where does it come disconnected at in the shifter assembly? I just have had no luck with my shifter recently and decided since i can get one on ebay for cheap why not replace the whole thing.

I'll see if I can find something but I'm sure Coby has a scematic available for an auto. I've just got personal experience with the manual.

What are the problems you are experiencing? You might not need to replace all of the shifter.

Well a metal piece came out of place so i stuck it back into place but it doesn't seem to be staying in place, its the piece that allows the key to come out of ignition when the car is in park, now it will not release the key and on top of that i took the assembly apart and the shifter knob will not go all the way back on

wow. I would think you might just be missing a step to get it all back together but if you feel buying a full assembly would be easier you got your how-to. Good luck.

yeah i mean all i did as far as taking it apart is taking the knob off and the trim around it to see if i could diagnose the problem, but saw the rod was just lying next to the assembly

So after further examination at the last minute before trying to decide if i should order a whole new shifter assembly i come to find out that it is my shift park release linkage has broken aka the piece that actually goes down into the shifter its self. So i go to look up the price of the piece on ebay and come to find out i can get the whole shifter assembly for not a whole lot more what would you guys do in this situation?
