Well, when your 02 sensor goes out, you will lose power as it's not going to be reading your afr's (air/Fuel ratio) correctly, thus allowing your car to run either too rich or too lean. Depending on which one it is (your upstream or downstream one), will depend on which fuel trims it throws off. The one closest to your engine is the short term fuel trims or the instant fuel trims where as the further one away is your long term fuel trims (otherwise known as your overall mpg setter). If your 02 sensor is out and your car is running too rich or too lean for too long, you can actually burn up your Catalytic Converter (or also known as your cat). If the code comes back I would replace your 02 sensor to keep from having any major issues. If your upstream 02 is the one that is out (the one closest to the engine), replace it with a replacement one, but if your rear one is out, change it out for a WB 02 sensor (as the rear one is a WB from the factory (as I see your car is an 09 ss)). It never hurts to have a WB 02 with a gauge in your car to read your afr's on the go. That will tell you a LOT about how your car is running.

One more question, did your mechanic disable the code or just clear the code?

yeah, if the 02 sensor is out, I highly recommend changing it too. The gauge and sensor are really not that bad or expensive to install, but they can be expensive to buy (I think mine was $150ish for my 09 SS for the gauge/sensor combo (which you can buy right from AEM and I'll post a link to it)). As far as mounting the gauge, you can either get a universal pod for the single gauge or you can get a dual A-pillar Pod for your car. Those are like $40, I'll see if I can find one, and you just add the gauge there, and run the wires from your 02 sensor to your gauge. Not hard at all to do.

Dual gauge pod and 02 sensor/gauge. Prices went up on these, but I'm sure you can find used ones for much cheaper.

if it doesn't come back on I'd say you're alright. And what octanes are you running? Also, is your ss a ss/tc or just an ss?

ok, the differences in octane wouldn't cause your 02 sensor to go out. I see on your signature you said you have a tuned exhaust, what would that consist of?

I'm going to throw my 2˘ in. There is a GM memo on HO2 codes poping up on the Cobalt for no apparent reason because the sensor in question and always the first one tested OK on the bench. The memo says that if vehicle is started then shut off before it enters in closed loop that this might trigger and HO2 code and I think it had something to do with condensation. I'm going to try and find that old memo.....Try and think back if you got in your car started it and realized you forgot something and shut it off real quick after starting it up. This code had you not cleared it should have gone away on it's own after so many start-ups that kept the engine running until closed loop. I believe it's 3 start-ups of at least 20 minutes run time.

yea lev,i think you mean light go on , thats what i was asking.just wondering incase the car was that touchy over octanes,if you have ever heard of? as for exhaust, when i got the car there was a whole bunch of parts that came with it,old airfilter housing, and intake pipe, orginal shifter and hardware, and exaust from manifold back.was told had "tuned exhaust" im not that up on the latest lingo but i suspect larger headers and bigger tubing back to a larger tail pipe. and she sure sounds like it!
